Cognitive Disabilities

Julian coached the swim team and was an high school calculus educator for 50 years in Gaston Country. For decades, Julian also participated in sculpting classic statuses in the local countryside. Upon retirement, Julian’s passion was on fire for his hobby and as he became well known as a gifted metal sculptor. He and Karla, his wife of 60 years, were enjoying their dreamlife. Then Karla perceived a markedly different behavior in Henry. Julian, she noticed would stare for long periods at his sculpting without moving at all. He seemed to be daydreaming. He seemed to be missing that razor sharp wittiness that made him the favorite at debates throughout his teaching career. Karla set an appointment for Julian to see a doctor, who performed a series of tests. The doctor explained to Karla and Julian had Alzheimer’s.

With Julian’s cognitive abilities swiftly on the decline. Karla couldn’t keep afloat and soon became overwhelmed with the everyday life. She was experiencing a troublesome time coping with the change in their relationship—moving from a life-loving spouse to primary caregiver. She immediately did the right thing and called Elevation Home Care and was introduced to Donna. While at Julian and Karla’s house, Donna removes a burden of stressful things to do from Karla’s list of things to get done – such as bathing and toilet assistance. Donna handles vacuum cleaning, dusting and and handles the loading and unloading of the dishwasher. With this sense of control re-established Karla now has the confidence to meet her friends for lunch, enjoy shopping, attend mass on Sundays and have her hair done regularly. She also has peace of mind to enjoy the company of Julian, hold his hand and think about the good times.
